Larry Nassar is an American convicted of child sex crimes. As a physical therapist of the US National Gymnastics Team, ‘Michigan State University’ (MSU) Gymnastics Team and ‘Twistars Gymnastics Club’, she used his position to sexually abuse underage girls (under the age of 13 years). Though many of his victims complained about him to the authorities at ‘MSU’ and ‘Twistars’, he was never investigated. He later pleaded guilty to 10 counts of sexual assault. He also admitted to owning pictures of child pornography. He is currently serving time for the latter. Her story of child sexual abuse was discovered by investigative reporters working with ‘The Indianapolis Star’.

In 1978, at the age of 15, Larry Nassar began working as a student athletic trainer for the girls’ gymnastics team at North Farmington High School, Farmington Hills. Three years later, he graduated from the same school.

She received a varsity high school letter in women’s artistic gymnastics, in 1981, in recognition of her contributions to the team. In 1985, he graduated from the ‘University of Michigan’ with a degree in kinesiology, a scientific study of human and non-human body movement. While in college, he worked with his soccer team and track and field team.

Larry Nassar became a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine after graduating from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1993.

From 1993 to 1996 he interned and completed his internship in family medicine, then known as the family practice, at the “St. Lawrence Hospital’ (later merged with ‘Sparrow Hospital’), Lansing, Michigan.

In 1997, Larry Nassar completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship.

Career

Nassar had enrolled in a masters degree in 1985. He also worked as an assistant graduate strength coach with ‘Wayne State University’, Detroit, Michigan for around 4 years. He then left ‘Wayne’ to join ‘Michigan State University’ (MSU) medical school.In 1986, Larry Nassar began working as an athletic trainer for the United States of America Gymnastics (USAG) national team.In 1988, he started working with the gymnastics training club known as ‘Gedderts’ Twistars USA Gymnastics Club’, located in Dimondale, Michigan and owned by John Geddert, former coach of the ‘USAG’ team, and his wife, Kathryn Geddert. In 1997, he started working with ‘Holt High School’, as a team doctor.In 1996, Larry Nassar started working as National Medical Coordinator for ‘USAG’ and continued to work there for the next 18 years

He began working as a team physician and assistant professor in the ‘Department of Family and Community Medicine in the College of Human Medicine’ of the ‘Michigan State University’ in 1997. In 2000 he accompanied the ‘USAG’ team at the ‘Olympics in Sydney, ‘Australia. He was part of the ‘USAG’ team during the 2008 ‘Olympics’ in Beijing, China. He retired from ‘USAG’ as medical coordinator, but chose to remain as a team doctor for the women’s artistic gymnastics team. He continues reading below. On August 30, 2016, he was relieved of all clinical and patient duties at ‘MSU’ and on September 20, 2016, he was fired from the assistant professor position. In November 2016, despite his fall from grace, contested Holt High School Board membership. She only got 2,730 votes (or about 21% of the total vote) and lost.

Family and personal life

On October 19, 1996, Nassar married Stephanie Lynn Anderson at the ‘St. John’s Catholic Church,” East Lansing, Michigan. They have three children: two daughters and a son. He remained in Holt, Michigan until his arrest in December 2016. After his arrest for sexual abuse, the couple separated. Stephanie was granted a divorce in mid-2017. She retained full custody of their children.

Highlights of Nassar’s sexual abuse

In 1992, while Larry Nassar was still in medical school, he sexually assaulted a woman.A popular gymnast who won an ‘Olympic’ medal said Nassar began sexually abusing her in 1994 and continued for 6 years. A parent brought Nassar’s offense to the attention of John Geddert in 1997, but Geddert did not act on it. Later, it also came to light that in 1998 Nassar had begun sexually assaulting his family friend’s 6-year-old daughter and did it every alternate week. The same year, an ‘MSU’ student complained about him to the university authorities, but they acted in Nassar’s favor. At the turn of the new millennium, another ‘MSU’ student reported his behavior to the university authorities, but this time too they turned a blind eye. Gymnast Rachael Denhollander was one of the first to accuse Nassar of sexual abuse. He had begun abusing her when, at age 15, she was treated by him for lower back pain in 2000. According to the charges against him in Ingham County, Michigan, one of the victims confessed about him to her parents in 2004 However, they have not taken any legal action against him. That year, she received or attempted to obtain pornographic pictures of children. Continue reading below In 2014, ‘MSU’ cleared him of any wrongdoing after a 3-month allegation of a recent college graduate who was sexually assaulted during her medical examination. All of these allegations were mentioned in investigative reports printed in the tabloid ‘The Indianapolis Star’ and various lawsuits and allegations followed after 2016. Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs suspended his medical license on January 24, 2017 , due to three complaints, disputes. On April 6, 2017, the department revoked his 3-year permit, with the caveat that he would have to pay $100,000 before reapplying.

Investigation and conviction

On August 4, 2016, ‘The Indianapolis Star’ published a detailed report on ‘USAG’ and its cover-up of sexual abuse allegations over the years. This report has encouraged many former gymnasts to file a lawsuit against Nassar. As of November 2016, he was indicted on 22 counts of sexual conduct in the first degree with minors, seven in Eaton County, Michigan and 15 in Ingham. He has been investigated by several law enforcement agencies, including the Michigan State Police, the Texas Division of Rangers and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In December 2016, he was arrested by the FBI for possessing more than 37,000 child pornography images and videos and for molesting underage girls. Federal charges have been brought against him. On July 11, 2017, he pleaded guilty to possessing images of child pornography dating from 2004-2016 and attempting to destroy and hide the evidence and photographs. He was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison. As of mid-January 2018, more than 150 women had accused him of sexual assault. During the trial, the Ingham judge allowed his accusers to make extended statements about the victim’s impact despite objections raised by his defense. On January 24, 2018, the judge sentenced him to 40-175 years in prison for child sexual abuse. Within 2 weeks, he was sentenced to 40-125 years in prison at Eaton. He is currently serving his federal sentence at the United States Penitentiary in Coleman, Florida, USA. The sentences Ingham and Eaton received will follow after he completes his federal sentence.
