Will Smith, an American actor, has been barred from attending the Oscars for the next ten years following a contentious encounter with comedian Chris Rock.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed Smith’s suspension in a statement to members on Friday, stating that the 94th Academy Awards had been “overshadowed by the unacceptable and damaging behavior we saw Mr Smith demonstrate on stage.”

He would be barred from attending any Academy activities or programs for the next decade.

According to the Academy:

“This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air star punched Chris Rock across the face when he made a joke about his wife’s bald head. Smith apologized for his actions and resigned from the Academy as a result of the incident.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars, met remotely on Friday to discuss disciplinary action.

It apologized for not reacting quickly enough when the slap occurred, and said the suspension was intended to protect performers and guests while also “restoring trust in the Academy.”

The Academy further praised Rock for “maintaining his poise under exceptional circumstances.”

On the same night, Will Smith received an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in the film King Richard.
