Top designer In Nigeria, Ugo Monye Files Case Against Producers Of “Coming 2 America” Over Imitating His Designs
Top designer in the Nigerian fashion industry and the owner of the male fashion company, Ugochukwu Monye has filed a lawsuit against the producers of ‘Coming 2 America’ over unauthorized reproduction of his designs.
Coming 2 America, a comedy film released earlier in 2021 came as a continuation to the 1988 film Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy.
Following its release, Amazon claimed the film had the best opening weekend of any streaming film since March 2020. Nielsen later reported that the film totaled 1.4 billion minutes-watched over its first week of release (equaling 1.27 million complete views of the film), the first time a Prime Original topped the company’s charts
Top designer in the Nigerian fashion industry and the owner of the male fashion company, Ugochukwu Monye , has taken to his Instagram page, revealing that his registered “Reale Design” was reproduced and featured in the movie, “Coming 2 America” without UML’s permission
According to him, the producers of the movie commissioned some designers in Nigeria to design and produce some costumes for the Movie that are an infringement of UML’s design
The Lawsuit reads;
“It has come to our attention that our Registered Reale Design was reproduced and featured in the movie, ‘Coming 2 America’ (the “Movie”) without UML’s authorisation. The producers – Paramount Pictures, New Republic Productions, Eddie Murphy Productions and Misher Film Productions- through the costume designer of the movie, Ruth E. Carter, commissioned some tailors/designers in Nigeria to design and produce some costumes for the Movie that are an infringement of UML’s design,”
The notice mentioned that there will be consequences against the film’s producers if not properly addressed.

I’m glad you’re taking up the step to fight for your intellectual property rights, I am even more excited that you took steps to protect your IP rights in your designs. That being said, I hope that the protection was not done within Nigeria or Africa alone as IP rights (trademark copyright or industrial design rights) are territorial in nature. So if you took steps to protect your designs internationally then this is a very good case 👏. Otherwise in afraid this fight may be limited to the territories of protection.
