Born in Madrid and raised in nearby Illescas, De Gea began his playing career with Atlético Madrid, rising through the academy system at the club before making his senior debut in 2009, aged 18. After being made Atlético’s first-choice goalkeeper, he helped the team win the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2010.

Since joining Manchester United, De Gea has made over 400 appearances and won a Premier League title, an FA Cup, a League Cup, three Community Shields and the UEFA Europa League.

During the UEFA Europa league final Match between Man United’s and Villarreal, United coaches Richard Hartis and Craig Mawson slipped a list of Villarreal’s players and where they normally put their penalties into the De Gea’s towel, before the penalty shootout.

However, De Gea was unable to save ANY of Villarreal’s 11 spot-kicks, before missing his own to hand the Spaniards their first-ever major trophy – and extend United’s trophyless streak to four years.

During the penalty shootout, De Gea went off-book THREE times.

Moi Gomez took Villarreal’s sixth penalty, with his notes revealing he would go down the middle.

But De Gea dived to his left, with Gomez – as suggested – rolling the ball into the centre of the goal.

De Gea also failed to adhere to the advice given on Pau Torres – with his gamble almost paying off.

Understandably, De Gea was given no advice on how to keep out opposite number Geronimo Rulli’s kick.

And when his own tame effort was parried away by Rulli, United were left disheartened – with Bruno Fernandes spotted in tears.
