Elizabeth Amoaa, a Ghanaian reproductive health advocate, has come out about how she discovered she has two wombs, two cervixes, and two reproductive organs.

She claims she didn’t find out about her unusual disease until five years after her daughter was born.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Amoaa was diagnosed with uterus didelphys, or “double uterus,” in 2015. Uterus didelphys is a disease that develops during fetal development when the two tubes that ordinarily form one uterus instead create two separate structures.

During an interview with GBC, the mother revealed that physicians misdiagnosed her pregnancy as an ectopic pregnancy since they were examining the wrong womb.

Doctors recommended that she abort the pregnancy at one point, but she refused and gave birth to her daughter, Rashley.

”My daughter was born prematurely. There is a lot that has happened in the 20-30 years of my life … Initially, I thought it was a curse but right now sitting here, I realise it’s a blessing rather than a curse,” she said.

Amoaa claimed that her second womb caused her severe pain during her pregnancy, but that learning she had two wombs provided her with answers as to why her physicians had missed it.
