VIDEO: Wizkid Features Justin Bieber on The Remix of His Hit Song ‘Essence’
Justin Bieber will be featured on a remix of WizKid’s Afrobeats song “Essence,” which also features vocalist Tems, WizKid revealed Thursday (Aug. 12).
On his social media accounts, the Nigerian singer hinted that “something spectacular” was on the way before unveiling an official remix featuring the Canadian pop artist, which will be released at midnight ET. “Thank you for letting me hop on the summer’s song,” Bieber said on Instagram, alongside a graphic that included the names of all three musicians above the song’s title.
After the Tems-assisted single “Essence” was released in October 2020 from Wiz’s album Made in Lagos, it debuted at No. 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July. Over the last five weeks, the sensuous Afrobeats/R&B club groove has progressively climbed the chart, reaching No. 54 in the week of August 14.
Following the Bieber-assisted remix, the song could see a boost in the charts, similar to what happened with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito.” In 2017, the Latin pop anthem soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for 16 weeks, tying the record for the longest-running No. 1 song at the time. With the new rendition of “Essence,” the watershed movement could translate to the Afrobeats genre.
