Lara played Tarzan(an archetypal feral child raised in the African jungle by the Mangani great apes) in the 1989 TV movie Tarzan in Manhattan and in the 1996-1997 follow-up TV series Tarzan: The Epic Adventures.

He also appeared in numerous action films, including Steel Frontier and American Cyborg: Steel Warrior. He stopped acting after 20 years in 2002 to pursue a career in country music. At the peak of his career, Lara appeared in two action films, Armstrong and Warhead.

The Laras’ Cessna C501 plane was carrying seven people when it crashed at around 11:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Saturday, shortly after taking off from Smyrna airport en route to Palm Beach, Florida,

The Cessna C501 plane went down into Percy Priest Lake, about 12 miles (19km) south of Nashville.

The actor’s wife, Gwen Shamblin Lara, an author and diet guru, was also among the dead.

The National Transportation Safety Board said no passengers were presumed to have survived and that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
